TORONTO LIVE: What to see in the city this week, April 29 – May 5

There are three picks for what you should see tonight if you are heading out for great live music.    First I have to mention Duncan Davies at the Cameron.  Really talented guy who brings a whole lot of soul to his music.  No cover, so this show is great for an easy going Monday night.    If you want something a little more soulful, The St. Royals are playing the Drake Lounge doing old school R&B/Motown hits.  Downstairs will be some great indie bands if you want some original music.   Lastly, Sarah Bareilles at the Phoenix.  A little pricy, but I have heard great things so this show should prove to be worth the ticket.

Duncan Davies Cameron House 8 pm. Apr 15-, Apr 22-, Apr 29-. Cameron House, 408 Queen W, Toronto, M5V 2A7, 416-703-0811,

The St Royals (soul/Motown/R&B) Drake Hotel Lounge doors 10 pm, free.

Tuesday we get a little folk, country, rock mix with three picks to get you tapping your feet.   Again, the Cameron house provides brilliant songwriters and Jadea Kelly is nothing less.   Next is the Joyful Sinners at the Drake Lounge, which is a free show so get your cowboy on and head down there for 10pm.   My pick out of the three has to be the last one – specifically Kevin Hearn’s  & Thin Buckle.  Hearn performs his solo music with the Thin Buckle band.   No, he wont be playing any Barenaked Ladies hits.

Jadea Kelly (folk) Cameron House 6 pm. Apr 23-, Apr 30-.  Cameron House, 408 Queen W, Toronto, M5V 2A7, 416-703-0811,

Wednesday is a little slow, with only two suggestions; however, they are mighty good ones.   Chris Caddell knows his way around all forms of rock… if you haven’t seen this head of curls wail away on the guitar, it is an absolute must.  Second gig is Spy Vs. Sly Vs. Spy at Resposado.  All of these musicians are super talented and having them all on the same bill is just incredible.

Chris Caddell (acoustic rock) Underground Garage.  Underground Garage, 365 King W, Toronto, M5V 1K1, 416-340-0365,

James Robertson, Sly Juhas, Michael Herring Spy Vs Sly Vs Spy Reposado. Every Wednesday. Reposado, 136 Ossington, Toronto, 416-532-6474,

All three of these shows are worth seeing.  If you can get more than one of these in, I highly suggest it.   Neil Young tribute at Hugh’s room is always a sold out show and the line up for this one is perfect.  The Juno’s After Dark show is one that industry folks will be heading out to.  Not often that there is a show at the ROM but the line up is hard to ignore.  Lastly is one of my favorite bands in the city.  Always a great night out if you want to dance and sing along to pop/soul/funk music.

Liam Titcomb, Corin Raymond, Zoe Sky-Jordan, Treasa Levasseur, Sean Cotten, the Undesirables, Hemingway Corner and others Borrowed Tunes: A Tribute To Neil Young Hugh’s Room 8:30 pm, $32.50, adv $30. May 3-, May 4-. Hugh’s Room, 2261 Dundas W, Toronto, M6R 1X6, 416-531-6604,

Very diverse sounds hitting Toronto on Saturday.   The show that I really wish I were going to is James Blake at the Danforth Music Hall (and the afterparty at wrongbar shouldn’t disappoint, either.)    If you are looking for something a little more traditional, David Baxter Band or Gary Kendal Blues Band are great choices.  Pink Floyd fans should check out Floyd Factor at The Rockpile.

Sunday there are two shows to suggest.  Purity Ring at Danforth Music hall is going to be a great show.  If you have never seen these guys live, you should.  The light show alone is worth the admission.  If you are looking for something a little less expensive, check out the Undiscovered Artists Series at Dora Keogh – these two artists are worth discovering.
