TORONTO LIVE: What to see in the city this week, May 6th – May 12th

Only one for tonight.   Go see the YUKA at the Drake Hotel Lounge.  It’s a free show and they start at 10pm.   There, now you have plans for tonight.

Yuka (funk) Drake Hotel Lounge doors 10 pm, free.   Drake Hotel, room: Lounge, 1150 Queen W, Toronto, M6J 1J3, 416-531-5042,

Tuesday we have three shows that I would recommend.  As usual there is a bit of diversity with these choices, so everyone should be able to find something they like.  First, as mentioned last week in a few suggestions… you should check out Chris Caddell who is playing with Cassius Pereira and Kenny Neal Jr. for the Tangled up in the Blues show at Lou Dawgs. They start at 8pm and you can grab delicious BBQ…smokey….goodness while waiting to hear some of the best music in the city.   For an easier listen, check out Jadea Kelly at the Cameron House for her weekly residency.   Sweet and beautiful with a twist, 6pm in the front room.   Also, later (10pm) at the Cameron, catch Run With The Kittens which are always a great time, so make a night of it.

I am interested in what Watch the Duck are doing at Wrongbar at 7pm.   Looks like a great show and is definitely worth the suggestion.   For more traditional music stylings, Tony McManus will be releasing his CD Mysterious Boundaries at Hugh’s Room.  Reservations are recommended as the seating is reserved for the dinner crowd.   This one will be good too because McManus isn’t just bringing his celtic influences, but also his finger style guitar playing and classical inspirations.   Then, if you have missed Mr. Chris Caddell earlier, he can be found playing more rock and roll hits over at the Underground Garage at 10pm.  Lastly, a good pub night can be found at the Harp Pub where the Johnny Max Band will be jamming out from 8-10pm.

Corin Raymond is still at the Cameron House, so check it out if you missed it last week.   Also Jerry Leger and the Situation at Castro’s is a beaches local show…a watering hole for this end of the city so to speak… and this resident band is always a major draw to this tiny club.  If you are (a lot) further west, I suggest going to the swanky Old Mill Inn – Home Smith Bar to catch Colleen Allen, Alana Bridgewater and Andrew Craig for their Thursday Night Jazz Party.  If Jazz is your thing, another suggestion is Kevin Quain at the Rex… but frankly, you can just go to the Rex and see amazing jazz players from all around.  Seems there is a new person playing every 30 minutes some days so you are sure to get your fill.

Not a lot happening it seems this Friday.  The Clks at the Drake Underground looks interesting, but I personally have never seen them live.   Then of course, there is always the Hogtown Syncopators at the Rex for an afternoon jam at 4pm.  If you are into comedy as an alternative, there is a really funny weekly show hosted at St. Louis Bar and Grill in the Beaches put on by Top Shelf Comedy.   Only $5 for a night of stand up and shenanigans.

The Cliks (blues/rock) Drake Hotel Underground doors 7 pm, $10, $15 w/ CD.  Drake Hotel, room: Underground, 1150 Queen W, Toronto, M6J 1J3, 416-531-5042,

If you are in the Kensington Market area late night, be sure to stop in at the Supermarket to hear DJ John Kong spin some smooth grooves starting at 11:30pm.  For just a straight up good time, the Happy Pals at Grossmans will fill your afternoon with beer.  Then stick around for the young soul/blues/funk cover band Chloe Watkinson and the Crossroads.  10-2am, this party happens once a month and takes about as long to recover.  Bring your dancing shoes and belt along with Try a Little Tenderness while the whole room jumps up and down….really a crazy sight.   Run With The Kittens have their second show of the week at the Rivoli, so again, if you missed them earlier, here is your second chance.  Souplesse/Benjamin Boles/The Noodleman at BassLine wont be one to miss either.

Amy Sky is releasing her album at Hugh’s Room and it would be a great way to have a sunday evening dinner/show night.   Not much else happening except the regular residencies around the city.   That being said, there is ALWAYS great music happening… you just have to discover it.

Amy Sky CD release Hugh’s Room 8:30 pm, $34, adv $30. Hugh’s Room, 2261 Dundas W, Toronto, M6R 1X6, 416-531-6604,
